Wacky Hazards of Wobble Warriors

Wonky Physics

One of the main ideas Gob & Co. had while brainstorming this game was combining the wonky physics of games like Gang Beasts with the dungeon crawler feel of Binding of Isaac. To encourage the physics side of the game, the team decided that knockback should be a big deal in gameplay. This led to a design policy for how traps or environmental hazards were created with major emphasis on physics and knockback while actual damage took a backseat. Deciding early on that the hazards wouldn't deal damage allowed us to design the hazards to act more outlandishly.

The Difference between a Hazard and a Trap

A key difference between hazards and traps is the way they are activated. All the hazards in the game have movement and will affect characters physically when they come into contact with the hazard, whether this is being sent flying upon contact with a slime, moving along the conveyor belt, or being run over by a minecart. These hazards will deliver less knockback than the traps, in consideration of the constant movement of the trap and the greater likelihood of players running into them. On the flip side, traps like the wall whacker or ejection floor have a greater knockback effect, bursting into motion when the player triggers the trap.

Using the Hazards to Win

When the team designed the traps and hazards, the goal behind them was players should take advantage of the hazards to gain an advantage over the goblins. Ignoring the traps and hazards on the flip side would make the levels more difficult. Astute players can split up the enemies in the room by tricking them into hazards to send them flying. Alternatively, if a player is surrounded by enemies, they may use the traps to make a quick escape.

Both the traps and hazards of Wobble Warriors are sure to create memorable moments during gameplay: dragons knocking goblins into hazards to send them flying, or goblins using them to ambush players from above.
